Notice to Residents

The Town of Tillsonburg wishes to advise residents that invasive plant control treatments will be taking place at two local wetland areas as part of an ongoing environmental restoration project.

Purpose of the Treatment

The treatment targets Phragmites australis, an invasive reed grass that spreads rapidly through wetlands. Left unchecked, Phragmites can crowd out native plants, reduce biodiversity, damage wildlife habitat, and restrict waterways.

The goal of this project is to eradicate invasive Phragmites, restore natural wetland function, improve water flow, and support the return of native vegetation, birds, and pollinators.

Treatment Details

The work will be completed by Giles Restoration Services, a licensed and qualified contractor specializing in invasive species management, under Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) Pesticide Permit #3262-DWMM87.

The treatment product being used is Habitat Aqua, a herbicide approved by Health Canada for use in and around water.

Site Safety Measures

To protect public safety during and immediately following treatment:

• Warning signs will be posted every 100 metres around treatment areas.
• Snow fencing will be installed at reasonable access points to the treatment sites.
• Public access to the treatment areas will be restricted for two days following application.

Precautions

Residents are asked to observe the following precautions for two days after treatment:

• No entry to the treatment areas by people or pets.
• Do not consume surface water within 1 kilometre of the treatment sites.
• No other interruptions to surrounding parkland amenities or recreational areas are anticipated.
