Mayor responds to repeated vandalism of Pride-themed crosswalk

Tillsonburg’s Progress Pride-themed crosswalk, located on Bridge Street West at Broadway, was once again the target of vandals over the weekend.

“Defacing public property is not acceptable in Tillsonburg at any time,” says Mayor Deb Gilvesy. “I cannot stress enough how concerning these incidents are to not only the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and their allies, but to the entire community.”

Over the weekend vandals applied black paint and diesel fuel to the crosswalk, creating a dangerous situation for motorists and an environmental hazard.

Members of Tillsonburg Fire Rescue Services assisted in cleaning the toxins from the roadway.

“This is reckless behavior and it needs to stop,” says Gilvesy.

The Progress Pride-themed crosswalk was installed by Oxford County Pride in late July and has been vandalized four times.

Anyone with information about these incidents is encouraged to contact Oxford OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
