CN Right‑of‑Way Vegetation Management Program – 2026

Back to Search

Canadian National Railway (CN) has notified the Town of Tillsonburg that vegetation management activities will take place along CN railway right‑of‑way corridors within and adjacent to our community between April and October 2026.

Vegetation management is a required part of railway safety and regulatory compliance. CN undertakes this work to maintain safe rail operations and reduce potential risks to surrounding communities.

Vegetation Management Methods

Vegetation management within CN’s right‑of‑way uses a combination of mechanical and limited chemical methods, depending on the location:

  • Safety‑critical areas, including the 24‑foot ballast section of the track and areas surrounding railway signals and communications equipment, may be treated using targeted chemical applications. These applications are performed with specialized equipment designed to minimize drift and environmental exposure.
  • Other right‑of‑way areas are primarily maintained using mechanical methods, such as mowing or brush cutting. In limited cases, chemical treatment may be used to control noxious or invasive weeds.

All work is carried out by qualified professional contractors retained by CN, who are required to follow all applicable laws, regulations, and environmental standards.

A regularly updated vegetation management schedule, along with frequently asked questions, is available at www.cn.ca/vegetation.

Community Requests and Inquiries

Residents who have specific concerns or noxious weed management requests related to CN right‑of‑way lands in the Tillsonburg area are asked to submit details through www.cn.ca/vegetation or by email to contact@cn.ca before June 1, 2026.

Requests received after this date will be reviewed as part of CN’s 2027 Vegetation Management Program.

For general questions, CN’s Public Inquiry Line is available at 1‑888‑888‑5909.
